PayPal Launches Apigee To-Go for the Adaptive Payments API »

PayPal has launched Apigee To-Go - an embedded, branded, customized version of the Apigee API Console, for the Adaptive Payments API. You can check out the new Console from the link on the Adaptive Payments API page or go directly to it.

We're really excited for PayPal to be one of our first partners for Apigee To-Go, reflecting their commitment to providing developers with great tools and support to help them build apps faster. Check out this video of how to use the PayPal API Console and start hacking! You can also see more about it on the PayPal X blog.

How to learn and explore PayPal’s Adaptive Payments APIs with Apigee Tools »

At PayPal's Innovate 2010 event yesterday, we launched our API Explorer for the PayPal Adaptive Payments APIs, including their new ones. Our own Sam Ramji gave a great demo on stage, but in case you couldn't be there, here's a quick overview of how to get started:

New API Console for Learning and Debugging the PayPal API »

In time for PayPal's Innovate conference, we've added the PayPal API to Apigee's API console. You can now easily view requests and responses to the PayPal API, test and debug, and share your results.

The PayPal API lets developers easily leverage its payment platform in apps, mobile and mashups. The Apigee PayPal console interacts with the PayPal sandbox environment to let you get up and running without needing to transact payments.

We've made getting started on the API a single-click task by pre-populating custom tokens and sample values for all request parameters, but when you are ready to get your hands dirty, here's a few things to get you going:

  • The Apigee console supports the PayPal API's custom token authentication scheme. The PayPal API uses multiple tokens, so we let you specify them as a custom token so it is easy to stay authenticated--you only need to authenticate once for the entire session.
  •  You can easily configure the request parameters by using the Apigee parameters pop-up. This is designed to support simple experimentation to figure out what you'll need for your apps and integrations.

Let us know your feedback and check out our other consoles for the Twitter, Facebook, and SimpleGeo APIs. And if you're hanging out at the Innovate conference, ping us on Twitter! We'll be hanging out at the hackathon.

Paypal X: Open API as an Indirect Strategy »

On Tuesday, the WSJ ran this article about the launch of Paypal X, Paypal’s developer program.

Great to see an API showcased as the heart of an industry leader's core business strategy - and called out as such in the top business newspaper.

Paypal is executing an indirect strategy by opening their core services via APIs in order to have their payment capabilities more easily consumed in other applications and services.

Ten years ago, you could read articles like this about companies launching their websites to execute a *direct* business strategy… selling directly to customers.

Just as it was a decade ago, companies will slowly wake up and realize that they need to have an indirect business strategy online, either because they see the massive business opportunity ahead of them, or they see their competitors already executing an indirect strategy against them.

We see 'indirect online strategies' like PayPal and TransUnion Interactive as the beginning of an emerging API Economy.   A company without an API in 2009 is like a company without a website in 1997.
